Before he left I made a t-shirt for his band Born With Open Eyes. The shirt had a warrior riding an elephant and stealing a maiden.

Without thinking about it he began taking pictures of himself riding an elephant sculptures that were all around a town he visited.

Before xmas I was antique shopping with my girlfriend when I stumpled on this 50 pound bronze elephant and only found it fitting that I pimp it out for him. Below is a gallery of the project.

This woman keeps me grounded. Thought I might try my hand at a wood cut to tell her so. This was the first woodblock I had done and even though I have done rubber lino before I forgot to flip the text!!!! I was inspired after talking to an ol friend, and teacher Alexi Natchev. He is an accomplished illustrator and he encouraged me to move from scratch-board to woodcuts.

Steven: “So where do you get your materials/wood”
Alexi: “aaahhh anyplace. You go to construction and take plywood from dumpster. hahha”
At least that’s how i remember it after a few dogfish. He’s pretty good at giving me a laugh and a new perspective

So as you’ll see in my process I actually carved this twice (even though my girlfriend only counts it as one gift…wtf right). I got the wood from a neighbors fire pit. Enjoy and thanks for letting me share with you my xmas gifts.

I made a woodblock print based on a 30’s head ornament. They will be for sale when my etsy site opens in a month or so. Feel free to send me contact information if you are interested. Hand carved, hand printed. Print area is 18x24. There will be extra paper boarding the print to make it easier to mat if your choose to do that. Paper is 100% cotton rag and acid-free. Weight: 250 grams/90 lbs. Ink is archival and oil based. Paper is hand died and water-colored.

We decided to be classy and make our own mask and costume.

Foam-core 1$
Mask= 3$
flour= 1$
glue= 1$ (Already Had)
newspaper= 2$ (Already Had)
paint 5$ (Already Had)
pants and shirt from salvation army = 5$
pip cleaners 1$ (Already Had)

First I bought a plain mask from acmoore then pushed it into some foam-core shape. It was a child’s mask so I had to cut the chin out.Ducked taped it from behind.


Then I enlarged the eye balls and started making a dome shape structure for the paper mache to lay on.
Then I got even crazier with the strips of tape along with some supports around the mask.
After layers of newspaper and mache I make a paste in my blendineee mixing paper flower and water.

Then I used pipe cleaners for the mouth shape and hot glue for the teeth. The pipecleaners will help create depth in the mouth.

Then layer 2 or three times around the mouth.
Couple coats of paint and all that is left to do is to fade around the eyes. This was the original logo and banner. The client wanted a more simple type oriented logo but didn’t want to lose the fireplace or the feeling of warmth. It is important that this logo be legible for the elderly and also look familiar. We kept the design simple to use for letter heads a printed shirts.

He has two great Podcast; “Beauty and Da Beast with Felicia Michaels” , and “Church of What’s Happening Now”.Both of which are available at itunes and are free. I don’t want to say too much because I wont do him justice but he’s real and in your face. In preparation for his Bmore show at the Comedy Factory I made a Poster to hopefully give him. Print it will be 24“x36”
UPDATE
Got to the show and sat right up front. The show had great energy and Joey Diaz was hype. Seeing his material in real like was great. After the show and a few words with Joey’s protection (nice bouncers in the end) I got to give him the poster. He took pictures with me and my girlfriend and was very polite. Long story short Joey Diaz is the real deal. Later that monday he was nice enough to give me a shout out on the Church of What’s Happening Now #12. Pictures of him,my beautiful girlfriend, and I are in the slideshow below.
